We had to drill holes the whole way down the edges of some of the panels every 6 inches. This made me kind of nervous...drilling holes in our new kayak panels? But I think it worked out. I ended up not using a jig as it mentions in the manual. I just measured every six inches and drew a dot 1/4 " away from the edge of the panel, then clamped them to the table and drilled away, we'll see if I was precise enough when we wire the hull together today. Since Kelly and I are building boats at the same time I just stacked all four like panels together and made sure they lined up well and then drilled all four at once. Saved a little bit of time.
Hi Mike,
ReplyDeleteNot sure if Nick has written back to you yet. We´re super stoked to hear about your guys big adventures- boat building and paddling the Inside Passage. We´re also glad to hear that our blog has been helpful, as we certainly leaned on the experience of others in our trip planning as well. It would be fun to meet up sometime in the spring, over beers and talk about your trip. We´re just across the way in B´ham.
The only other bit of advice I can think of right now is to get a hold of some big blue Ikea shopping bags for shuttling gear. There cheap, durable, pack down to a really small size and are perfect for packing and unpacking your boats (which you will be doing a lot, like every day =) Also, I imagine you´ve already hooked up with Shauna and Leon at Body, Boat, Blade on Orcas. They are world class paddlers and offer top notch instructional courses.
We´re hoping to put our boats in the water tomorrow, and start the next big trip. Wish us luck and let´s be in touch again in the spring. We´ll be back in the middle of April.
becky peace
p.s. we could probably loan you guys some charts and guides and such. keep that in mind, because the costs add up fast.
